What does MEC involve, and how can students prepare?

FINGY · Updated

MEC preparation can follow the problem, users, solution, business reasoning and presentation. Identify the region and current brief before planning the work. A polished slide deck cannot substitute for a supported need and proposal.

MEC overview and regional routes; requirements vary by region.

What is MEC?

MEC stands for Model Entrepreneur Competition. Its official introduction describes an entrepreneurship competition where students develop business ideas and discuss them with peers and judges. Entry routes distinguish regions and formats. Confirm the region, edition and stage before planning.

Connect three questions

FINGY suggests asking who faces the problem, why the solution could work and what resources and income would sustain it. For a practice idea about school queues, “make an app” is incomplete: who would use it, what alternatives exist and what constraints apply? This is an exercise, not an official assignment.

Test assumptions through research

Observe a specific situation, speak with potential users and compare existing solutions. Separate observations from assumptions; do not present untested numbers as facts. Connect evidence, solution and costs in one explanation, and consider what happens if an assumption is wrong.

Verify regional requirements

On October 10, 2026, the official directory lists China 2027 among its programmes, while the main site notes that first-round formats vary by region. Do not copy another region’s team size, dates or judging rules. Check eligibility, deliverables, language, fees and schedule through the relevant official route.

Check the reasoning before the pitch

FINGY learning guidance

StepSomething to review
Define a problemA problem statement naming the user and situation.
Research usersInterview or observation notes and the assumptions they support or challenge.
Develop a solutionA sketch, prototype or explanation showing its main use.
Business reasoningWho might pay, what the main costs are and which figures are assumptions.
Present and respondWhether the problem, evidence and choices form a coherent explanation.

When there are many ideas, test a crucial assumption

Practice example: a team wants to make a homework-planning tool. Before listing ten features, investigate how students currently organise work, where difficulties occur and what they have already tried. If scheduling is not the main difficulty, the idea needs revision. This illustrates a research approach, not a required MEC topic. Keep a record of the original assumption, new evidence and revision to guide the next discussion.

Can preparation begin before there is a finished product?

Yes: start by investigating a problem and its users. Whether a prototype is required, and how it must be presented, depends on the current rules of the specific programme.
